Sam Gowland
Engineer
Biography
I am an engineer and computer scientist with a background that spans automotive engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. My path into research has been shaped by a hands-on, hardware-aware perspective — I like building things, and I bring that instinct to digital and computational problems.
At the Circadia Lab, I prototype devices for ongoing research projects, sitting at the intersection of engineering and circadian science. My doctoral work takes a different but complementary direction: my thesis, Cyberspace as a Mediator for Human-Wildlife Interactions, examines how social media and AI represent, bias, and mediate the relationship between people and wildlife. Alongside this, I have a long-standing interest in how digital technology can support sleep research and improve everyday life in ways that go beyond the obvious applications.
